MICHAEL BROOKES WAS a self-made millionaire. He’d made his first million setting up a company that specialised in repackaging name branded products into cut-price superstores’ own packaging. He started this when he was thirty; by thirty-five he had 15 factories across Europe. He then put money into real estate, and this tripled his investments. His next venture saw him take advantage of the potential in a small start-up company on the Alternative Investment Market and he loaded a couple of million into that. This investment paid off, and he made returns in the region of three hundred percent. It wasn’t bad going for a boy from the poor end of Plymouth docks.

Because of all this hard work, his only child and son, Carl, didn’t have to worry about finances.

And he didn’t; in a rather spectacular way.

His father had bought and maintained a huge duplex apartment in Mayfair and had gifted it to his son. It was thirty miles away from his university, but when that thirty miles was spent in a Porsche 911 convertible, then they were absolutely, ultimately bearable.

So, in that vein, Carl thought nothing of purchasing a massive storage warehouse in the East End docks under his father’s name. Why not? he thought, dad won’t even notice.

For his own purposes, he was able to locate and procure a huge antique oak circle table and have it delivered and installed in the warehouse. He had found a unique carpenter who specialised in occultist ornamental carvings and hired him to work on the table to a specific set of instructions straight from Robert. Both had overseen everything, from the fitting of the red velvet curtains, procuring the incense and other ornate objects required for the completion of this ritual, to having a state-of-the-art PA system and a rather intricate lighting rig fitted. Finally, Brenda had done a fantastic job of designing, and making, the costumes that were to be worn by everyone present.

Friday was to be the first official meeting of The Twelve. This was the only one required prior to the actual ritual. Everyone would make their pledges and reveal their individual wishes.

There was only one part of his spending spree that they hadn’t yet received, and it was the one set of items that both he and Robert were worried about. It was the tiny, individual sacks they had procured, at great expense. These were integral to the whole of the ritual.

Robert had been rather specific in the design, the materials, and the sizes of these sacks. They had scoured everywhere to find them. Small packets about 2cm x 2cm made from a specific reed only found in a small area of the Tibetan mountains. He’d read about them in some select scripts but had found them immensely difficult to locate and purchase.

After a lengthy search, he’d finally tracked down an occultist who lived in San Diego, USA. This guy made them himself from regular visits to the Tibetan mountains for his own solitude rituals.
